How to Plant Flower Bulbs for a Stunning Garden
Bulbs are one of the easiest ways to flower
Flower bulbs store everything they need to bloom inside them — plant them right, and they reward you with vibrant flowers with little effort. Here’s how to get it right.
Choose firm, healthy bulbs
Start with quality. Good bulbs are firm, plump, and free of mould or soft spots. Dried-out or mushy bulbs rarely sprout, so begin with fresh, healthy stock.
Pick the right spot
Most flowering bulbs love sun, so choose a spot with good light and well-draining soil. Waterlogged soil is the biggest enemy — bulbs rot in soggy ground.
Plant at the right depth
A simple rule: plant a bulb about two to three times as deep as its height. Too shallow and it dries out or topples; too deep and it struggles to surface. Plant with the pointed end up and roots down.
Space them out
Give bulbs a little room between them so they have space to grow and multiply. Planting in clusters or groups creates a fuller, more natural display.
Water after planting
Water well once after planting to settle the soil and trigger root growth, then water sparingly until shoots appear. Don’t keep the soil soggy.
Be patient
Bulbs take time to root and sprout — sometimes weeks. Once they emerge, keep the soil lightly moist and let the sun do its work. The wait is worth it.
